WEST PYMBOLIANS FIRST FLAG

AFTER their narrow defeat last year by Belrose, it was a case of West Pymble utilising that experience to their advantage and consolidating their various playing positions.

While many bowlers are unfamiliar with the two green club, situated just off Ryde Road near De Burghs Bridge, which is slightly obscured by the stately gum trees that line the Prince of Wales Drive.

The 60-year-old club was initially planned and built due to the dozens of ex-servicemen, many of whom had been allocated residential building lots in the area, and believed a bowling/recreation club would engender an essential community atmosphere.

Apart from playing the well credentialled and the 2016 grade 5 flag winners Manly, West Pymble's other challenge was Harbord's new tiff green. While the green is new and still relatively soft they obviously found it to their liking as they led 18-4 after 18 ends.

Manly had a horror first few ends, particularly on one rink when they dropped 11 shots in three ends. With the advantage of hindsight Manly were forced to play "catch up bowls" for the entire game. Negativity then becomes obvious as a rink will settle for one or maybe two shots, rather than look for multiples.

Although they regrouped and were only eight shots in arrears after 30 ends, West Pymble had hit their straps and obviously relished the soft going and consequently streaked away to set up an unattainable lead.

FINAL SCORE: West Pymble 72 def. Manly 52.

West Pymble can wet a line at Tuncurry between games at the State play offs.
