SENIOR INTER-ZONE - Day 2

Zone 9 Senior Side at Olds Park BC
Mark Alexander, Wednesday, 11 March 2020

Another outstanding day on the greens at Olds Park BC has seen our Zone 9 Senior Side reach tomorrow's semi-finals of the 2020 BNSW Seniors Inter-zone Sides Championships.

In this morning's Round 3 match, Zone 9 were somewhat slow out of the blocks against Zone 3 (North-Western NSW) and were soon down 16-25 after 24 ends.  From there, the ability and team-work of this talented side came to the fore as they rallied to draw level at 37 all on 41 ends before streeting away to record a comfortable 65-50 (10-0) victory, winning on all three rinks.

Zone 9 topped their Section, recording 29 points from a possible 30 and a healthy margin of +59 shots, and as a result earned the right to play the runner-up, Zone 6 (Hunter), from the other Section held at Olds Park.

The quarter-final against Zone 6 began reasonably quietly with both Zones trading shots such that the score after 13 ends slightly favoured Zone 9 to the tune of 14-9.  From thereon it was an absolute demolition as the 'Niners' put on a relentless exhibition of high-quality bowls to forge ahead 32-10 after 22 ends, 51-16 after 35 ends and 63-17 after 42 ends before the Hunter boys did the honourable thing and conceded the match after just 54 ends with Zone 9 ahead 80-19.  This victory was built around a sensational 35-4 win by Steve Clark's rink that featured multiple large counts, including a count of 7 on an early end that seemed to be the catalyst for this extraordinary team performance.  Not to be outdone, Steve Ashdown's rink won 26-6 and Terry Warder's team won 19-9 to complete a terrific across the green team effort.

In Thursday morning's semi-final, Zone 9 will play Zone 16 (Illawarra) who, coincidentally, they met and defeated at the same stage last year en-route to claiming the Inter-zone crown.  Let's hope that augurs well for our Zone 9 Seniors this year as they look to go back-to-back!!

Go Zone 9!!
