Tony Tinworth, Monday, 25 August 2008

The Zone mourns the passing on 19th August  of  Maurie Bonney, Patron of the Zone.

Maurie, a Life member of Lindfield Bowling Club was a legend in Zone 9 as his election as Patron for many years testifies. His extensive involvement in the Zone , and the previous Upper North Shore District Bowling Association, goes back over more than 25, possibly 30 years. By 1980 he was a District Selector and from 1982 to 1992 Chairman of the District Match Committee, from 1992 to 1994 a member of the State Coaching Committee, then becoming a member of the State Match Committee until 1995. At that time he was appointed as representative (State Councillor) of the then newly incorporated Zone 9 on the Board of the RNSWBA. He held this position until September 2001. He was made a Life Member of the UNSDBA in 1992 and Patron of the newly incorporated Sydney Northern Districts Bowling Association (Zone9) in 2004

In addition to his contribution as an administrator, his bowling achievements are extensive. He represented the State on 67 occasions, 55 times as skip having been first chosen in 1976. He was part of a team which won the No1 State Pennant in 1976 and 1983. In Club games at Lindfield he won the Singles Championship 15 times, Doubles 5 times, Triples 7 times and was skip of Fours teams to win the Championship 8 times. In 2000 he was awarded the Olympic Sports Medal, nominated by the RNSWBA.

Lindfield’s annual Maurie Bonney Day is held in his honour.

In the words of Past VP of the RNSWBA Tom Giles “By any standard, his contribution to the game at all levels, as a player and as an administrator, has been outstanding”.
