STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS - Pairs - Summary

Mark Alexander, Monday, 23 September 2019

As with the Triples earlier in the NSW State Championships, the completion of sectional play unfortunately saw none of our Zone 9 teams progress to the semi-finals though the Balgowlah team in the Reserve Pairs came agonisingly close to a semi-final berth.

In the Open Pairs, the Belrose Bulls duo of Ethan Scott-Branagan and Stuart Rigg put their 10/31 loss to Nelson Bay (Z2) in Sunday's Round 1 behind them and, despite two further losses, showed plenty of fight and skill in today's matches where a hard-fought narrow 16/21 loss to Waverley (Z13) was followed by a 14/28 loss to Taree Leagues (Z11).  Any disappointment from the young Bulls with the results over the past two days should be tempered by their wonderful achievement in winning the Zone Pairs this year, a history-making occasion.

Harbord's Stephen Allcorn and Mick Powell had the uneviable task of backing up today after their resounding 12/42 loss to Mingara (Z15) in Round 1 but did so in fantastic style with a come-from-behind 22/17 victory over the legendary Rex Johnston and his team from Tuncurry Beach (Z11).  That proved to be the high-point of the Hawks' campaign as they were defeated 11/20 in their Round 3 match against Lightning Ridge (Z3).

The heart-breaking story of the Championships to date belongs to the Balgowlah team of Paul Terry and Sean Semler in the Reserve Pairs.  Despite not losing a match in sectional play, Paul and Sean missed out on a spot in the semi-finals on for-and-against.  Balgowlah backed up their solid 19/15 victory over Mudgee (Z4) in Round 1 with a comprehensive 23/13 win over Taree Leagues (Z11) in Round 2.  These and other results meant that their Round 3 clash with Austral (Z5) was in effect a 'winner-take-all' match as both teams were undefeated.  Balgowlah held sway early on before Austral skipped away to lead 21/9 after 14 ends at which point the fightback began as Balgowlah closed to trail 17/22 after 18 ends and then one final push saw them record a 23/23 draw, an agonising one shot from victory.
