STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS - Fours - Summary

Mark Alexander, Friday, 27 September 2019

It may have taken till the last event on the program but Zone 9 finally has a side through to the post-sectional rounds of the NSW State Championships, a side with every capability of going all the way to hopefully bring home the inaugural State Senior Fours title.

In the Open Fours, the North Sydney Bears were missing two of their established stars in Jamen Lewis and Kenta Treacher but their replacements, Liam Collins and Steve Keating, provided great support to Allan Coy and Zak Abro.  Unfortunately both matches today followed a similar pattern with the Bears leading for much of each before collapsing over the final few ends, losing 21/23 in Round 2 to Taree Leagues (Z11) and then 20/28 to Ballina (Z1) in Round 3.

In the Reserve Fours, the Lindfield Rollers team of Alan Plambeck, Willie Mok, Ian Kimmorley and Phil Lewis had their chances to win their section and reach the semi-finals but fell at the last hurdle.  A 12/26 loss to Revesby Workers (Z12) in Round 2, coupled with other results in their section, meant that the Rollers had to win their final match to progress.  A tight opening saw the Rollers leading Cootamundra Ex-Services (Z8) 11/8 after 9 ends but from there it was largely one-way traffic as the country boys dominated to inflict a shattering 14/23 loss.  Nonetheless, the Rollers can look back with some pride at their achievements in reaching the State Finals in both the Reserve Triples and Fours.

And so to the Senior Fours where the Belrose Bulls 'awesome foursome' of Joe Saragozza, John Venteman, Crawford Linton and Tony Taylor have qualified for the semi-finals following an unbeaten run through their sectional rounds.  After yesterday's solid 28/16 victory over Maitland City (Z6), the Bulls today accounted for Urunga (Z14) 22/17 and then South Tamworth (Z3) 23/14.  In Sunday morning's semi-final the Bulls take on Bathurst City (Z4) who also progressed with an unbeaten record.

Best wishes to the "old" Bulls!!!
